Acer A515-51G-515J Laptop

Acer A515-51G-515J

Priced at around $600 and jam-pack with the latest coffee lake CPUs from Intel and MX150 GPUs from Nvdia, this laptop is here to set the stage for Intel’s 8th gen processor series, code named Coffee Lake processors. With the last few generations of Intel processors we are see a growing trend of improved performance on laptop and mobile chipsets where are the desktop market is pretty stagnant.

The same is true for the 2-core/4-thread CPU which is an i5-8250U inside this model. It is a better performer than the true 4-core/4-threads i5-7300HQ in both single and mutli-threaded workloads at a slightly lower clock speeds. It has 1.6 GHz base-clock which can turbo boost up to 3.40GHz. The lower base clock helps in lowering the power consumption when it is not under stress. It has up to 6M of cache which is an improvement over its previous generation counterpart i5-7200U which had only 3M of L3 cache.

For ensuring that you can use this CPU at its full potential you get 8GB of DDR4 dual-channel memory which offers a comfortable room for all your running apps to reside, so you can have a flawless multi-tasking experience. Improving the overall responsiveness of the system further, is a 256 GB SSD which reduces boot times and loading screen times significantly.

For gaming in particular the improved processor is going to be a huge help, especially if your games are CPU intensive. The GPU that comes is not bad either, MX150 from Nvidia may not be the most powerful GPU in the market, but for budget conscious purchases this is really the best bang for the buck. The performance however is higher than the old GeForce GTX 950M with GDDR5 memory (Notebookcheck). Being the latest and the greatest in the industry it is also going to be optimized the most to give all the FPS that it can.

Viewing experience is pretty awesome as well. Nothing that has not already been done before, but the standard 1920 by 1080 resolution, 15.6 inch, IPS panel is awesome for both gaming and productivity. Especially, given the capabilities of the MX150, a 1080p gaming experience is going to be just fine on medium settings.

The body is constructed with hard plastic and has no extravagant design or flamboyance to it. This makes it suitable for being carried anywhere from office to home and even at conferences. Given the power-efficient components that it has, it can offer up to 15 hours outdoors usage, encouraging outdoor usage.

It weighs 5.27 pounds and is 1.20 inch thick which puts some penalty on portability of the laptop. In connectivity section we see, 1 USB 3.1 Type C Gen1 port (up to 5 Gbps), 2 USB 3.0 ports (one with power-off charging), 1 USB 2.0 port, 1 HDMI port, Bluetooth 4.1, and Wi-Fi 802.11 ac.

When your budget does not allow you to go all out for a top-of-the-line gaming computer and you want the portability of a laptop, the Acer A515-51G-515J out on top for performance and affordability. Even if you balance your game playing time with work, school projects, multimedia activities or multitask, the seventh generation Intel Core i5-8250U and 8 GB of RAM will give you all the power you need. Whatever your particular needs, this Acer will handle them at a price point under $600.

Acer Aspire 3 A315-41-R001

Acer Aspire 3 A315-41-R001

The new Aspire 3 Series seems to offer quite a bit for its rather modest selling price. With this laptop you get a well-sized 15.6-inch Windows 10 machine, Full HD Display and AMD Ryzen 5 chipset – not bad specifications at all for a budget laptop.

We could say that AMD’s Ryzen 5 2500U Mobile processor architecture is quite impressive and it provides a really powerful performance. It comes with 4-cores, clocked at a base frequency of 2.0 GHz with precision boost up to 3.6 GHz. This is backed by 8GB of DDR4 RAM. Although Intel core i5-8250U has a slightly faster effective speed when it comes to gaming, the powerful Radeon Vega 8 Integrated Graphics is what makes AMD really stands out against Intel. It is about 50% faster than i5-8250U’s UHD 620 graphics, meaning it can be used for some solid gaming. Besides, the Ryzen processors have the more cost-effective price and they are becoming a more attractive option for custom builders who want to future-proof their systems for a few more years.

The great advantage of this laptop certainly has to be 256GB SSD hard drive. The speed is where SSDs shine and whether you’re using your computer for fun, school, or business, the extra speed may be the difference between finishing on time and failing. Another amazing thing is that the compartment door allows you to upgrade storage and memory as you see fit. Therefore, you can always bring your device to a new level for an even better experience.

It also has a very attractive design: the cross hairline-brush pattern on top with the smooth horizontal hairline brush on the operating surface. It’s a neat finish that complements the durable construction nicely. The display is a Full HD LED-backlit, which means images are at least pleasingly firm. If you pay enough attention you’ll still be able to spot individual pixels, but the 1920 x 1080 resolution means clear and sharp results. Unfortunately, the color reproduction of Acer’s display is rather abysmal, so this laptop it’s not recommended for the photo or video editors. On the brighter side, it does have BluelightShield feature. You just have to turn it on and filter out the eye-straining blue light.

With budget laptops such as this, one of the better aspects is usually the battery life and it can last up to 6 hours. It weighs 5.07 pounds so you easily place it in a backpack and take it wherever you want. The noise of the cooling fan is acceptable. It is noticeable for sure but the machine doesn’t get loud or hot which means the cooling management system is a plus. You surely won’t have any connection issues since this laptop has the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi which comes with the three times faster connection speed than the previous generations.

For connectivity, we get Bluetooth 4.1, a very solid webcam, one USB 3.0 port, two USB 2.0 ports and an HDMI 2.0 Port with HDCP support.

Summary

All in all, this laptop is great if you want to save some money but get a good casual gaming device at the same time. It’s enough to just take a look at the specifications and you will be aware that you can’t go wrong with this one.

Dell i5575-A217SLV-PUS Laptop

Dell i5575-A217SLV-PUS Laptop

Similar to the Acer Aspire 3 on this list, this $543 laptop also has AMD Ryzen 5 2500U Mobile Processor with Radeon Vega 8 Graphics which provides both great performance and speed. As already said in the previous review, this configuration is great for casual gaming. Using integrated graphics with AMD APU you can really experience the power of smooth gaming on an everyday basis.

What makes this laptop more attractive than other ones is an ample amount of memory. It comes with the 8GB DDR4 memory, clocked at 2400 MHz which can be extended up to 32 GB. With the memory like this, you can easily multitask like a pro very fast. As for hard drive, it is 1TB HDD with 5400 revolutions per minute which is more than a solid for a budget laptop and besides, it gives you plenty of space to store the backup.

The display is 15.6 inches Full HD with LED-backlit which means that is not very accurate at colors or contrast and the viewing angles are quite average. That is definitely a minus considering its price range.

Since it weighs only 4.89lbs, this laptop is portable and you can easily carry it with you wherever you go. Whether you are at the work or Starbucks, its thin and gentle design will certainly catch attention. You can also be sure that hinges will stay tight, even after using them for a longer period.

It comes with the strongly backlit keyboard and also features a fingerprint reader at the power button. This can be extremely useful for the multiple users since it provides secure logins.

This laptop introduces Dell Cinema with incredible sound and streaming. Waves MaxxAudio Pro is very impressive at producing the great sound. Both high and low frequencies sound decent and mids are well-balanced. The good thing is there is a reasonable base to enjoy more songs and even movies so make sure to make most of it using this feature.

The cooler does a really good job and this laptop can survive in short-term heat conditions of up to 149°F. Using battery saver, you can get around 4 hours on light and two and a half on medium usage.

Another useful thing is the number of ports that comes with this laptop. We get 3-in-1 SD card reader, USB 2.0, DVD Drive, an HDMI port, security cable slot, Ethernet, USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C, USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A and an audio jack.

Summary

To wrap up: it looks good, has a decent processor suitable for light gaming, lots of storage to choose from memory expandable even up to 32GB, plenty of ports and a DVD drive as well as very good sound. I would say that the deal breaker is only the battery life and absence of faster, SSD hard drive.

Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5577: GTX 1050 GPU

Dell Inspiron i5577-5328BLK-PUS:

Dell Inspiron i5577 priced around 700$ is going to be the most powerful gaming laptop on our list it has quite a decent GPU for its price point, the GTX 1050, and has thus made it to the list for the gaming oriented readers of ours.

The CPU is an i5-7300HQ which is just a shade less in performance that the 8th gen processor we saw inside Acer. It is a true quad-core 4-core/4-threads chip with no hyper-threading and 6M of cache. The clock speeds can go as high as 3.5 GHz and the base clock speed is 2.5 GHz. Memory is 8GB DDR4 which, as we have discussed at length in our previous reviews, is going to work just fine at this price point.

Next for storage, you will get a 1 TB of HDD which is quite disappointing as it hinders the responsiveness thanks to the severely low IOPS as compared to an SSD. However, considering that it is a gaming laptop and you may want to store a large collection of games locally. It makes sense to have a large storage space.

Graphics, as already mentioned, is a decent GTX 1050 with 4 GB of VRAM. Just perfect for 1080p gaming. It is powerful enough to play most games at medium to high settings and nearly at 60fps. Especially, if you are into competitive gaming, this will work just fine for you. The display is a beautiful 1920 by 1080 IPS panel, spanning 15.6 inches and has an anti-glare coating to encourage outdoor usages.

The chassis is made of hard plastic with black finish on it. It has a very sleek and subtle red accent to it that shows that the manufacturer has paid attention to detail. It weighs 5.66 pounds and is 1 inch thick.

Although it is about $80 more than other laptops above, it is undoubtedly the best performer especially in terms of gaming. The GTX 1050 is more than twice as fast as the MX 150, in raw benchmarks alone. At the same time, its CPU is also at par with the coffee i5-8250U. So gamers and enthusiasts should not shy away picking one of these up!

ASUS TUF Fx504 Laptop – GTX 1050 GPU, Price around 700$

ASUS TUF Thin & Light Gaming Laptop (FX504)

Most of the gaming laptops usually start at a high price point even if they do not pack all the kickass features. But the FX504 is an exception in this regard. Apart from the display and a slow storage drive, the Asus TUF FX504 has all the reasons to be there in your preference list. Let’s find out!

The display screen size is of 15.6 inches surrounded by a chunky bezel. With a resolution of 1080p, the display performance is below average and that’s where things go out of hand. The display is pretty much blunt with dim lighting. The colour reproduction is also not great and is just like other mediocre performers. On the bright side regarding the display, it was sharp. The laptop weighs somewhat in the mid-range but is thicker than its counterparts.

The FX504 offers a lot of connectivity options such as an Ethernet jack, an HDMI port, a USB 2.0 port, 2 USB 3.0 ports and also a headphone jack. The touchpad and keyboard performed decently well. The keyboard is backlit in red and the touchpad felt slippery at times. The keys were pretty solid and ideal for gaming usage. The speaker on the FX504 was in no doubt a mediocre performer. The sounds were loud and clear.

Now coming to the main part, the FX504 houses a Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 with 2GB of VRAM. Combining this with the Intel Core i5-8300H CPU and 8GB of RAM, you can manage to play all the decent titles in low to mid settings flawlessly. The higher intensive titles might not give out great results in this gaming rig. The storage capacity is decent with 1 TB of FireCuda SSHD drive, while not as fast as a SSD, still has write and read speeds well above those of standard HDD’s. The laptop also comes bundled with Windows 10 OS and has a webcam of 720p recording capacity.

Asus has other laptops in the FX504 series too which can be taken into consideration. But considering the price point and the value it offers for the same, this gaming machine from Asus under a commendable price tag is worth the shot keeping the display aspects aside.

Acer Aspire E17 Laptop 17.3 inch

Acer Aspire E7 Laptop

This model from the Acer is exactly like its younger brother the Acer Aspire E15-E5-575G-53VG except for the huge screen size. This laptop is one of the most affordable 17-inch rig that you can lay your hands out there.

The build quality is pretty decent with an aluminium back casing and feels solid. The design is elegant and gives a premium touch to this affordable machine. The screen size as mentioned above is 17.3 inches Full HD screen with a resolution of 1080*1920p resolution. Since the price is not too high, one can expect a standard TN panel for the display and that is exactly what is being offered here.

The screen colour reproduction is 94% of the NTSC colour gamut and the image quality is pretty decent too. Due to these two aspects, the display performance is somewhat commendable even though the other elements such as viewing angles could have been improved. The in-built blue light filter technology helps prevent eye strain during prolonged hours of usage. It also incorporates Acer ComfyView Widescreen technology and LED Backlight.

The processor is an Intel Core i5 7200U Dual Core running at 2.5 GHz. Up to 3.1 GHz. The RAM is of 8 GB DDR4 with a Nvidia Geforce 940MX GPU with 2GB  GDDR5 VRAM. The processor along with the GPU and RAM is sufficient to play medium intense games and lower and medium settings.

Although the keyboard doesn’t comes with optional light illumination but is built decently well. The trackpad also felt nice to work around with but the sensitivity could have been a tad bit higher. The storage capacity is 256 GB SSD which is not too much especially if you are a hardcore gamer. The storage drive is a Solid state drive which delivers quick performance. The connectivity ports include two USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port, a USB 3.1 port, headphone jack and an HDMI port. Acer has also included support for MIMO technology too. The OS that comes bundled along with this device is Windows 10.

If you are looking at an affordable gaming machine with a bigger screen than normal rigs, then the Acer Aspire E5-774G-52W1 might just be the option to look at.
