I am sure that by now, everybody is aware of the benefits of exfoliating the skin and has included scrubbing in their skin care regimen. Exfoliation removes the upper dead layer of the skin and also does away with the deep-rooted impurities thus revealing a bright and fresh skin. It also helps in delaying the appearance of wrinkles, removes blackheads and whiteheads and imparts a beautiful glow on the skin.

I don’t like to use readymade scrubs and prefer to prepare them at home itself. The scrub I am sharing today has been handed down to me by my mother. It is easy, economical and super effective. Subsequently, I discovered that Shahnaz Hussain, one of the pioneers of herbal beauty products, writes for a leading Bengali women’s magazine and swears by this treatment. She advises this scrub to everyone looking for ways to get rid of dry, patchy, pigmented, dull or tanned skin as a preliminary step.
The ingredients required are very simple and is found in every household I am sure.

Things Required:
- Powdered rice.
- Curd.
Step-by-Step Procedure:
1. Take about a teaspoon of powdered rice.
2. Add one tablespoon of curd.
3. Mix well. It can be applied instantly, but I prefer to let the rice powder soak in the curd for around 5-10 minutes so that it becomes softer.
4. Apply this all over the face and neck and leave for 10-15 minutes.
5. Wet your hands and scrub away the pack using gentle and circular strokes.
6. Wash with ample water, wipe dry and say “hello” to fresh baby soft skin!
Keep in Mind:
- Do not use it under the eyes. Instead, massage curd or honey under your eyes.
- This makes a wonderful body scrub too.
- Scrubbing is great for the skin and the result is instantaneous, but please do not overdo. It is best done twice a week.
- I use it before taking a shower but have read somewhere that it is best to scrub at night just before going to bed, then follow your regular nightly skin care regime, and wake up to a soft and smooth skin!

Neha, how long did it take to rid you of the tan? I’m curious as I have tanned arms and feet and I don’t like the color much. Thank you!
I’m so going to try this out!!! 😀
Neha@ yes, it DOES work like magic!! thanks for putting up this post!! 🙂

but how can i make this rice powder at home ?
Jyoti, you will get powdered rice in any grocery store…it is useful in making batter for making bhajis. 🙂
wow, simple and sounds nice!
Yes Varsha…it is easy peasy to make but gives remarkable results!! 🙂
I have used rice powder and milk as a face scrub – the best scrub I’ve ever used on my face, and body as well, for that matter!
I love this recipe, Sanhita! I will substitute the milk with curds and see what I get. Thank you so much!
Also, on a not entirely unrelated note, I’m just discovering the benefits of curds for my hair. The best conditioner EVER! 😀
Okay I’m done 😀 😛
Samantha, curd helps immensely in removing tan. I have extremely dry hair (grrrrrr) and my hair too loves curd!! same pinch!! 🙂
sounds good sanhita, but m a lil confusd n i may sound dumb, is rice flour and powdered rice same thing 😐 😐 😐
ok, i think rice flour is rather fine, and this powdered rice could b a little grainy, I believe, 😐
Nupur, look for the one that is powdered finely…the grainy version may be a little rough for the delicate skin of the face!!
Rice flour and rice powder is the same thing btw. It’s powdered very finely to make flour 😀
Thanks Samantha for explaining!! u made my job easy!! sweets!! 🙂
yes i swear by this..very very effective, spcly for oily skin.. may fav thing..i powder rice at home only though its little grainy so scrub very gently.. trust me gals u ll have baby soft skin.
Oh! i have dry skin and was wondering how will it react to oily skin…thanks for sharing that it works for oily skin too!! 🙂
yes rice is very effective in controlling oil secretion..
Oh i have been using powdered rice for years!! It is really effective. I usually store a mixture of powdered rice, powdered masoor dal, sandalwood powder, orange peel powder and fullers earth in a jar. Mix it with honey\curd\rose water\lemon juice\cucumber juice\tomato juice… Whatever suits you. Its been my face pack for years 🙂
wow!! with so many things added the efficacy must have increased a lot!! natural ingredients zindabaad!! 🙂
